As we eagerly leave 2020 behind, I have decided to venture off on my own into the world of private practice. While I am grateful to have had an invaluable experience at The Cole Center, formerly, TY and Associates, (Jen and Brenda, you are truly amazing!), I felt it was time for a little personal and professional growth. I figured I have been doing this counseling thing for a while, why not make it my own now? As my faith is an integral part of my life, I thought I should make it more of a focus in my work as well. In the past, I have used a faith-based approach for my clients who had expressed interest. Faith gives us a sense of meaning and hope. I felt it was especially necessary to turn my focus to faith-based counseling, given the impact the events of 2020 have had on all of us. It is my hope to continue to work with all clients, Christian or otherwise. I do intend to post blogs, resources, etc., to address a variety of mental health needs, including those oriented toward faith.
As I progress on this journey, I am learning a lot, not just about insurance and business, but about myself. It has been uncomfortable at times, as I do not know everything. I like information and knowing how things work. I will admit, not knowing some things has given me some anxiety, like insurance billing and how to edit a website. Fortunately for me, anxiety is my area of expertise! However, I still have had some sleepless nights. Just as I would coach my clients, I have been working on positive self-talk, i.e., “I’ll figure it out. It will be okay.” I have been focusing on the things I can control, i.e., what I can do about a particular problem or question I have. I find educating oneself is always a useful tool in managing anxiety. Talking to others is especially helpful, as positive social connections are healthy for us. Of course, taking breaks to do something enjoyable is a must. Focus on the present moment. After all, that is all we have! And, as I preach to just about everyone, “breathe!” Deep breathing is absolutely the best strategy for managing anxiety, or other intense emotions.
Thank you for reading this post. I just wanted to share a bit about my journey thus far. More to come!
